1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z Z28 – Rare, useable classic American V8

The desirable IROC-Z Z28, named after the International Race of Champions, features upgraded suspension, lowered ride height, specially valved Delco-Bilstein shocks, larger diameter sway bars, a steering/frame brace known as the “wonder bar”, removable T-Tops with stowage case in the boot, and a special decal package. Of 137,760 Camaro’s built in 1987 only 38,889 were IROC-Z Z28’s; at a cost of circa $14,000, they were a big deal back then and a rare sight on the roads today.
Fire up the 305 ci 5 litre V8 Paxton supercharged engine and put the four-speed automatic transmission, with a Hurst Quarterstick Shifter, into Drive and you know you’re in a burbling classic AmericanV8 cruiser. This example is in excellent mechanical shape; running, driving & stopping superbly.
The good news is that interior is in great condition with no rips or tears to the grey velour seats, carpets are good with Camaro Z28 mats in place, no splitting or cracking to the dash and perfect veneers with no splits, cracks or delamination. The less good news is that the headlining would benefit from some attention, particularly around the T-Tops, although perfectly useable as it is.
Finished in striking metallic purple with black bonnet accents, we have found no signs of corrosion although the paint would benefit from a cosmetic refresh and is showing signs of age in places. Again, perfectly useable as it is with room to improve should the next owner choose to do so at some point in the future.
It’s riding on a superb set of Center Line wheels with BF Goodrich g-force Comps all round.
Unusually, this car only spent a short time in the states before arriving in the UK in 1991, with just 3 former UK keepers and taking the file and condition into consideration we have no reason to doubt the recorded mileage of 52,000.The file includes the Owners Manual, Build Sheet, MOT Certificates going back to 1991 and a large collection of receipts & invoices supporting the regular maintenance programme.
On the key and MOT’d until Jan 2024 this rare & very useable Classic American V8 is ready to go!
