Description
We like a ‘best of both worlds’ car and this Beetle ticks a lot of boxes for us….tastefully modified externally with the look of an earlier (& many think prettier) car, it boasts the front wings with slanted lights and grills of pre-1968 cars and along with the earlier chrome bumpers with overriders, unvented deck lid & moon dish hubcaps; this 1972 1300 enjoys the appearance of the mid ‘60s Beetles with the mechanical benefit of a later 1285cc twin port engine.
Whilst tastefully modified outside, it retains a highly original look inside. The textured black vinyl seats hold their form well with the only issue being a tear in the passenger seat. The vinyl headlining unusually remains well-supported and is in clean condition for its age & the carpets are also in perfectly useable condition. This is one of the nicest original style interiors we’ve seen for a ling time!
Under the front lid is in excellent condition, holding the spare wheel, fuel tank with internal filler and washer bottle and very pleasingly no signs of rot whatsoever.
Overall, the bug appears very smart and straight with good panel fit and no corrosion that we can find both topside & underneath. It’s encouraging that the car has been regularly MOT’d despite no legal requirement & the car will be sold with a current MOT.
The only faults we’ve found is that the the boot lid catch can be temperamental (but is easily operated by pulling the cable by the glove box), a tear in the passenger seat and a scuff to the drivers running board rubbers. Some small age related marks to bodywork add to the general patination and the car presents very well indeed for a 51 year old, with the AA Relay sticker and roof rack adding nice retro period touches.
Under the back lid the 1285cc twin port engine runs sweet and smooth and benefits from improved gasflow producing more power than some of its predecessors.
The 4 speed manual gearbox is smooth, clutch is good, steering direct and brakes are sharp and straight – this one is driving particularly well!
The last owner had this car for 14 years and it was purchased from and then maintained by Brookside VW Aircooled Specialists as is evidenced in the file, with the full specialist service history documented to the value of over £3,500. Last serviced by Brookside in May this year, it was also subject to a mechanical overhaul in 2019 at a cost of £1,250, with very few miles covered since.
This is a particularly nice & well maintained example of practical, useable ‘best of both worlds’ Beetle that is an absolute joy to drive.
